Decluttering Tips

I firmly believe that external clutter equals internal clutter and if you're feeling overwhelmed by clutter in your home, here are some tips which may help to make the process of decluttering easier.

1) Sit down and make a list of every single area of your home and life that you would like to declutter.

2) Decide to do one decluttering task every day, every week, or every month.

3) When decluttering an area, make several piles for what you'd like to do with the items. For example, if you wanted to declutter a messy closet, I'd suggest making five piles:

  • Items to keep
  • Items to throw
  • Items to give away
  • Items to alter
  • Items to store

4) Play some music or watch tv while decluttering to make the task less boring
or tedious.

5) Have a plan for where and how you want to store everything that you'll be fixing.

6) Each time you complete a task, cross it off your list and bask in the wonderful feeling of accomplishment!

  1. Your organizing printables are so cute, and totally useful-love 'em!
Decluttering a space could be so stressful, so my tip-- I usually imagine that a visitor is coming within 8 mins, my task declutter as much as I can, and I'm usually happy with the results, do this three times a week. I don't have checklist yet, but I believe that will help, thanks to your tip. But up to this moment, I still don't know what to do with my old textbooks, still want them-- maybe I'll just get a new bookshelf...

    1. Thanks, Lisa! For textbooks, maybe keep them in large plastic covered containers? I do this for yearbooks or other things that I want to keep neatly, but don't quite know how or if I want to display them.

  2. And the hard part is knowing that getting a new container will eat a lot of space. It's just so hard to let go of old books... I'm looking forward to "submit a tip"-- hopefully asap. Have a great weekend, Monica.
