In Place of Paper Towels

Mar 4, 2013
In an effort to cut down on paper towel waste and expense, we bought a bunch of cheap kitchen towels for...wait for it...our kitchen!!

These cloth towel are kept in a plastic drawer in the cabinet under the sink, and we use one or two a day to clean various kitchen surfaces. At the end of each day, we toss the used towel(s) in this bright green basket which is also kept under the sink:

When the basket is full (usually after a week or week-and-a-half), we just throw the kitchen towels in the washing machine, dry them, and they're ready to be used again!

We still keep a small supply of paper towels in our house and still find them useful for cleaning certain things like doggy "accidents," but at least we no longer use or buy them as often as before.

Small steps! :)

  1. I really like this idea. I just wish I knew how to sew! Failed that class...

    1. I don't know how to sew either...would be great to learn, but i just don't think I have the patience for it! :)

  2. I am looking into doing this myself. And also switching to cloth napkins!

    1. Oooh! I need to work on the cloth napkins bit too.

  3. another thing that works great is a stack of micro fiber clothes. When the pile gets low, time to wash. A roll of paper towels last us years.
The best place to purchase micro-fiber clothes - the automotive section at Target!
