Keeping Track of Expenses With a Receipt Holder

Dec 29, 2012
One of the things I want to do differently in 2013 is to keep better track of daily expenses. This should also help my husband and I when we create our monthly budgets.

I think one of the reasons why we haven't been fully successful with keeping track of expenses is because we found it inconvenient to note them down at the time of purchase. We'd wait until a few hours or a few days later to write it down, which inevitably led to us forgetting to do it altogether.

This coming year, a solution we hope will work better for us is to keep a receipt holder in our car. That way, whenever we buy something when we're out, we can just stick the receipt in the holder. Then at the end of each week, we'll remove the receipts and note down our expenses for that week. Of course, this won't work for purchases that don't have physical receipts (ie online shopping), but we have less of those kinds of expenses, so we should be able to remember to write those down more easily.

Here's a photo of our receipt holder:

I just took an empty plastic accordion folder I had lying around, and decorated it with some washi tape (love this stuff!) to make it look a little less plain. Just simple, but hopefully this method will help us keep better track of our daily expenses!
